Agape Satyagraha Goes to United States Institute of Peace

Monday a week ago, I took teens from the Boys & Girls Club, Agape Satyagraha Program, to the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, DC.  Soryada Fontana, co-leader with me, and Geo Bonilla, Programs Director at the Boys & Girls Club accompanied us.

Agape Satyagraha is a faith based program developed by the Church of the Brethren, On Earth Peace.  It is a five tier conflict resolution curriculum that teaches teens about positive and negative conflict and ways to deescalate conflict in a peaceful, nonviolent manner.  Our program related to mostly local issues and what teens are faced with in their everyday interactions with classmates and society.  Some national issues were discussed.  We used mediums of role playing, group dialogue, interactive exercises, practicing interpersonal skills, communication skills and articulating in writing what was gained from the experience.  I was impressed with the richness and diversity of our teen members perspectives and dialogue.  They were very engaging and impressive teens indeed!

While at the United States Institute of Peace, we gained another perspective on international peace and nonviolent initiatives.  I was impressed with the teens depth of knowledge and their interaction with group discussion especially since we did not touch upon international initiatives in our training.  To learn more about the United States Institute of Peace and their work follow this link http://www.usip.org/.
